Exhaust Manifolds – What do They Do?

Exhaust manifolds funnel the emissions from the cylinders to the rest of your system, making it the first, and a key part of your car’s exhaust.

If you have an engine with a V arrangement (V6, V8 etc.) then your car will have two manifolds, one for each bank. Cars with 2, 3 and 4 cylinders will usually have one exhaust manifold.

Exhaust manifolds are a common modification for any car owner looking to achieve noticeable performance gains, but what can you expect from upgrading your manifold?

The first benefit of an aftermarket manifold is improved exhaust flow. This means exhaust gas can flow more freely through the system, resulting in instant performance benefits. A freer flowing part delivers improved throttle response, so when you put your foot down you can expect the power to be instantly available making a manifold the perfect addition to any daily driver or track car.

Another result of improved gas flow is increased power and torque across the RPM range. This is ultimately what people look for when upgrading their exhaust parts, so to achieve this from just one part makes exhaust manifolds cost-effective and means performance gains can be accessible to everybody.

Our manifolds are all manufactured from T304 stainless steel, replacing the much heavier standard manifolds which are usually made from cast iron. So not only does a new manifold improve power, but it also reduces weight too.

Different Types of Manifolds

Depending on which car you have, you could be faced with a choice of what manifold to go for. The most popular layouts are 4-1 and 4-2-1 exhaust manifolds. A 4-1 is the least restrictive option, funnelling all 4 branches into one pipe, delivering performance gains at the top end of the rev range, making it a great choice for any performance or track car. The 4-2-1 manifold is a nice middle ground, with the 4 branches going down to 2 and then 1 pipe. A benefit of this layout is that it achieves improved low-end torque which is ideal for any daily or road-going car.

A new manifold can be an excellent upgrade on its own, or even more effective when partnered with an aftermarket downpipe or a full exhaust system for maximum gains.
